Matheson (I Am Legend) and director John Hough (Twins of Evil) give equal respect to each perspective resulting in a horror film that approaches the unknown with a rare intelligence. In conclusion, “The Legend of Hell House” is a haunting tale of supernatural terror that stands the test of time. Its expertly crafted atmosphere, memorable performances, and thought-provoking storyline make it a true gem in the horror genre.

Florence thinks she’s found the key to the haunting – Belasco’s rumored son, Daniel, died without knowing love and peace, and after dismissing his advances she finally gives herself over to the troubled spirit only to discover just how wrong she was. Ann meanwhile is the dutiful wife to a detached scientist, and her untapped desires find themselves channeled into a sexy somnambulism that sees her graphically hitting on poor, befuddled Benjamin. The sequences feature suggested or silhouetted nudity, and when paired with earlier descriptions of Belasco’s carnally-focused parties we’re left feeling the foul atmosphere without needing to experience it firsthand. Barrett agrees, brings along his wife Ann (Gayle Hunnicutt), and is teamed up with two psychics – Florence Tanner (Pamela Franklin, The Innocents) is a mental medium, young but highly regarded, and Benjamin Fischer (Roddy McDowall, Fright Night) is her physical medium counterpart.

From its origins as a novel to its adaptation onto the big screen, this movie has left an indelible mark on the horror genre. So grab some popcorn, turn off the lights, and prepare to be terrified by this haunting tale. Aging millionaire Rudolf Deutsch wants to be assured of the existence of life after death. He offers a group of parapsychologists and mediums £100,000 each if they will investigate the notoriously haunted Belasco mansion, which has been nicknamed Hell House. A previous attempt to explore the house sent all but one of the investigating team insane. A new team is assembled under parapsychological researcher Chris Barrett.
He’s created a machine that he claims will dissipate the mindless energy through reverse polarity thereby emptying the house of so-called paranormal activity. John Hough does a fine job with the things-that-go-bump-in-the-night aspects of the material, he fails to breathe any life into Richard Matheson's woefully underdeveloped screenplay, which he adapted from his own novel. The performances and script of this movie are all top notch, but what really makes this movie one of my favorites in the subgenre is its direction by Hough. The external shots of the house were filmed at Wykehurst Park, West Sussex. Mr. Deutsch's mansion in the opening sequence is Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The Legend of Hell House is one of only two productions of James H. Nicholson after his departure from American International Pictures — a company he had run, along with Samuel Z. Arkoff, since 1954.

It’s the unsettled spirits of these revelers who are thought to haunt the home, and Barrett believes he has the answer to clearing them out once and for all. Roddy McDowall, who began his long career as a child actor in the late thirties, should need no introduction. McDowall continued his career successfully into adulthood, but it was usually in character roles, notably in heavy makeup as various chimpanzee characters in four of the five original Planet Of The Apes movies (1968 to 1973) and in the 1974 television series that followed. He was frequently a guest star on television shows, appearing in such series as the original Twilight Zone, The Eleventh Hour, Buck Rogers In The 25th Century, Night Gallery, The Invaders, Fantasy Island, Columbo, and Quantum Leap. He played the villain Bookworm in the camp sixties Batman television series and had an acclaimed recurring role as The Mad Hatter in Batman The Animated Series. Barrett, Tanner, and Fischer are hired by dying millionaire, William Reinhardt Deutsch, to investigate the possibility of life after death for a week. To this end, they must enter the infamous Belasco House in Maine, regarded as the most haunted house in the world. The house is called "Hell House" due to the horrible acts of blasphemy and perversion that occurred there under the silent influence and supervision of Emeric Belasco. Meanwhile, there are other mysteries to be found in Hell House, such as the supposed murder of Emeric Belasco's son, Daniel Myron Belasco, and the puzzle as to why a majority of people who enter the home are dead by the end of their visit. I loved this idea and its execution here as a kid, and re-watches of the film have confirmed for me just how well the latter explores the former. Barrett and his wife are non-believers in the paranormal world of ghosts and possessions, while the two mediums think his scientific approach is bunk in the face of spirits and the afterlife.
That’s not to imply the film is dry, but instead it perfectly sets the stage for a tale that begins with an academic feel before descending into fleshy madness. Despite mixed reviews upon its release, “The Legend of Hell House” has gained a deserved cult following over the years. Its legacy as a horror classic is cemented by its ability to go beyond conventional scares and explore deeper emotional themes.

Legendary genre screenwriter Richard Matheson has simplified his original book Hell House (1971). Primarily, Matheson pares down the book’s shock excesses, something that would have brought the film into the domain of The Exorcist (1973), which came out six months later the same year.
Set in the eerie and mysterious Belasco House, the film follows a team of paranormal investigators as they attempt to unravel the dark secrets of this haunted mansion. The Mount Everest of haunted houses, it was once the home of Emeric Belasco (Michael Gough), a millionaire infamous for all manner of excessive perversions – sadism, bestiality, necrophilia and cannibalism. A physicist (Clive Revill) and his wife (Gayle Hunnicutt) and two mediums (Roddy McDowall and Pamela Franklin) are hired by an eccentric to prove the existence of life after death, and Hell House is to be the proving ground. As they argue science versus the supernatural, evil forces shake the house. One-by-one the visitors are stalked by the spirits of the house, which seem to manifest a bizarre and powerful sexual influence on them. Piece-by-piece the terrifying secret of Hell House is unraveled, leading the survivors to the film’s final, shocking climactic revelation.
