Campus police spokesperson Marc Lovicott said four officers were injured Wednesday as police tried to remove protesters’ tents from a central square at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Protesters arrested at the University of Georgia were issued interim suspensions and barred from campus without being given a chance to appeal. Georgia Republicans on Wednesday reiterated their support for a forceful police response to campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war. He said he didn’t yet have a sense how many of those arrested were students and how many weren’t affiliated with the colleges. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Wednesday that about 170 of the 280 arrested at Columbia University and nearby City College the night before have received summonses.

The university has been paralyzed by demonstrations, and police have cleared out a building that had been occupied by anti-war protesters. The Provost at Columbia University in New York says all final exams and any remaining class sessions should be held remotely for students at its Morningside Heights campus. Any papers, projects or presentations due this week also are being delayed until next week. Several students who spoke said they had to rely on each other, not the police, for support as they were attacked, and that many in the pro-Palestinian encampment remained peaceful and did not engage with counter-protesters. Speakers disputed the university’s account that 15 people were injured and one hospitalized, saying the number of people taken to the hospital was higher. One student described needing to go to the hospital after being hit in the head by an object wielded by counter-protesters.

Keen direction, a strong screenplay, and a standout performance by Roddy McDowall make this feature a must-see for anyone who has yet to experience the film. I’m going to pause here to say that McDowall is ridiculously good in this role. The Planet of the Apes films and his portrayal of vampire hunter Peter Vincent are among his best remembered, but his turn here is easily my favorite. Benjamin is a man damaged by horrific tragedy and an experience that left him unable to continue using his psychic gifts.

Even as objects begin to hurl themselves at Fischer, he continues to defy the entity, and insults Belasco's physical stature. Fischer then concentrates, and a stained-glass partition in the chapel shatters, revealing a hidden door. As someone who loves spooky, intelligent tales of the supernatural despite a lack of belief in the subject, The Legend of Hell House (along with Matheson’s novel) hits a beautiful sweet spot where science and the paranormal come together in a smart and sexy union. It oozes an increasingly creepy and carnal atmosphere before reminding us that our fears of the unknown can be tempered with a simple realization. However, it does draw inspiration from real-life haunted house legends and paranormal experiences. Sent on the mission are a physicist, a femme mental medium and a physical medium.

In A Bug’s Life (1998), one of his final contributions to motion pictures, he provides the voice of Mister Soil. A team consisting of a physicist, his wife, a young female psychic and the only survivor of the previous visit are sent to the notorious Hell House to prove/disprove survival after death. Previous visitors have either been killed or gone mad, and it is up to the team to survive a full week in isolation, and solve the mystery of the Hell House. The house is believed to be haunted by the victims of Belasco's twisted and sadistic desires.

This includes Barrett’s wife Ann and mediums Florence Tanner and Benjamin Fischer, the sole survivor of the previous investigation. Once inside however, the house begins to prey on the team and their individual weaknesses. Granted, while the movie didn’t go nearly as hard as similarly-themed films in decades to come, it was quite a bit more graphic and disturbing than other haunted house films around the time, including House on Haunted Hill or Burnt Offerings. For 1973, there were plenty of glass shards going into faces, murderous cats, and late-night, sexually frustrated, ghost-chomped bite marks to satisfy even today’s horror fans. One of the film’s strengths lies in its ability to keep viewers guessing with unexpected twists and turns. The script, written by Matheson himself, masterfully combines elements of exorcism, possession, and psychic phenomena to create a truly chilling narrative.

The novel has been filmed twice, both times under the title The Haunting (1963 and 1999), and was also inspiration for William Castle’s House On Haunted Hill (1959 and 1999). In 1971, prolific horror author and screenwriter Richard Matheson successfully created his own take on Shirley Jackson’s tale, adapted his own novel to the big screen and introduced us to The Legend Of Hell House (1973). There’s a particular scene when the group enters the house that belongs on the all-time best horror camera shots list. The group experience multiple instances of unexplained activity from moving objects – some shifting innocently while others launch with murderous intent – to what remains my favorite scene involving ectoplasm. Ghostbusters is great and all, but watching smoky tendrils slowly form from Florence’s fingers while Barrett’s staid British voice intones “Leave a sample in the jar please” is my plasm jam.
The Legend of Hell House was released on DVD by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on 4 September 2001. The film features a score with an electronic music bassline (with occasional woodwind and brass stabs). The score and electronic sound effects were created by Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, recorded at Hodgson's Electrophon studio in London.
Now, I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to see such an innovative film and obvious inspiration in the haunted house subgenre. If you haven’t seen it (or you haven’t read the book), I highly suggest you do the same. In addition to competent direction and a well-written screenplay, the film also benefits from a strong cast. He needn’t say much about the life-changing impact of his last visit to the Belasco House for the viewer to know it still haunts him. Ben usually speaks in a near-whisper, with a monotone delivery; giving the impression he’s a hollowed-out shell of his former self.
Both eschew the standard clanking chains and headless ghosts and aim for more cerebral places. Both also owe something to the psychological ghosts of Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898) and the suggestion that apparitions exists somewhere between the real, repression and what the ghostbusters want to believe. Four investigators seek psychic phenomena in a haunted mansion, the scene of a number of murders. Hough’s film is rated PG (although it was branded with an X upon initial release in the UK), but by the time the credits roll you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d experienced more than you have. Both Florence and Ann find their softer sides manipulated by the house, one by opening herself up too wide and the other by remaining far too clenched.
In 1973, the novel was made into a film The Legend of Hell House, starring Pamela Franklin, Roddy McDowall, Clive Revill, and Gayle Hunnicutt. Roddy McDowall does another of the trembling, fearful cowards he specialised in, but emerges with unexpected strength to become the hero of the hour. Pamela Franklin, who was only a few years earlier the teenage love interest in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), has a more grown-up role here (one of a number of genre appearances she made throughout the 1970s) and gives a mature, intelligent performance. The idea that the spirits’ connections to the house were caused due to the location being used for debauchery (drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.) along with vampirism and murder, was a great move in giving the location its own personality. The ideas of scientific facts vs. faith, or believers vs. non-believers hadn’t really been explored much in film, and while we as the audience could see what was happening in the film, the actors were so into their roles, that the non-believers were almost convincing.
Police at two campuses in Arizona have cleared out encampments and arrested pro-Palestinian protesters. Most of those arrested Wednesday were released “with no citation issued,” Lovicott said. No one was arrested, and it’s not clear if all the demonstrators were students. The protesters are demanding that the University of Minnesota divest from companies that do business in Israel and put out a statement that supports Palestinian students. The Texas Department of Public Safety has accused Carlos Sanchez, a photojournalist with Austin television station KTBC, of hitting a state trooper with a camera while covering the April 24 protest. Video on social media showed troopers pulling Sanchez to the ground after he followed a mass of protesters and police.
