Split ends are rife, layers have grown out, fringes are morphing into curtains, action needs to be taken, but is cutting your own hair at home really the way forward? Ah the humble haircut, how we took you for granted BC (before COVID, of course). While some of us managed to nab an appointment in-between Lockdown 1.0 and 2.0 or had the fortune of living in a Tier 1-3 area – we are all now faced with the same restrictions in Lockdown 3.0. Again, our beloved hairdressers and beauty salons will close their doors and for many of us, we’ll be taking our beauty maintenance in-house. Which means more DIY manicures, several sheet masks and perhaps a haircut at home. If it’s the latter you’re considering, remember to always tread, or rather snip, carefully.

Getting a perfectly even DIY cut can be tricky, but this tried-and-true method for achieving layers at home is great for beginners. Before you get started, you'll want to invest in a pair of razor-sharp styling shears designed specifically for the task, like Equinox Professional Shears, for the best-looking cut (and the healthiest hair) possible. Dull edges on household scissors could potentially give you even more split ends (plus, ew, cross-contamination).

For tighter curl types ranging from 3C to 4C, try sectioning your hair, gently detangling, and using firm pressure to keep it from moving too much as you trim. Bring one section forward at a time, and determine how much you want to take off—we suggest a quarter of an inch to half an inch. (Cut a little less than you think you should.) Trim off the length and then snip the ends to add texture and blend everything out.

It is important to do the bare minimum to keep this experience as foolproof as possible. The idea is to keep your hair from looking stringy or too outgrown. Just make sure you have sharp hair shears, a thorough tutorial featuring your own hair type, and expert advice (like…everything above), and when in doubt, cut less, not more. If you have long hair and you’ve been wondering how to cut your own hair in layers, bobbles are the answer. To DIY the so-called ponytail haircut, simply scrape your hair into a pony at the front of your head, comb the ponytail, and chop the tips off straight across with scissors or clippers. Some point-cutting added, and voila – you have a haircut with long layers! This works for hair of almost any length, starting from lob cuts and ending with mermaid locks.

Step 1: What You Need + Tips:

You can always take more hair off, but you can't add back what you've already chopped! If you're cutting your hair while it's wet, remember it will look even shorter once it dries, so snip with extreme caution. In fact, if your strands are curly or you're wavy-haired, only cut your hair when it's dry so you can get a better idea of what the final look will be. If you have straight hair, you can cut while it's wet or dampen it with a spray bottle first to get the cleanest, sharpest lines possible. While a salon appointment with a trained hairstylist is the safest way to go for any kind of haircut, sometimes you gotta do it yourself—and that’s okay.

It goes without saying that different hair types require different techniques. If you have afro-textured or curly hair and like to wear it natural, do not cur your own hair in straight lines – is not going to have the desired effect. Instead of trying to tame your curls into one single length, go with the flow of your hair. This is a good guide for blending short haircuts and dealing with cowlicks, and here's a tutorial for classic shaggy toddler haircuts. When in doubt, you can always use a mixing bowl (or a headband). By high school, a bowl cut is not going to help their social standing.

Try to put off your trim until you can see your stylist, Mocarski says, but if you truly cannot wait, she thinks this video by New York stylist Brad Mondo isn’t as “terrible” as many other online tutorials. The cut requires basic tools, can be done alone, and works well on long, straight hair. When you become comfortable with the scissors and become less afraid of experimenting, you’re ready to start other techniques and cuts. "Use the comb as a guide for a straight line, then cut upwards with the scissors." But whatever you do, be patient and keep your cuts minimal.

The W8less is also easier to use in a bathroom without convenient outlets, since its 8-foot cord makes it usable farther away. If you have curly hair, opt for the Rusk CTC Lite, which offers the same performance and warranty as the W8less and comes with a diffuser to help define curls. The key is to start small with a few careful snips — and to go slow.

If you have thick, curly hair, cutting your hair at home is all about sectioning your layers and making minor cuts to your ends for healthier hair to extend the length between professional trips to the salon. This style is layered with bangs, but you can also just trim the ends of your hair using the same technique. With straight and wavy hair, O’Neil recommends to section hair by splitting your hair and placing each side over the shoulders, drawing your hair all the way to the front.

How to cut your own hair short:

If you’re hearing the siren call of aesthetic change or just feeling annoyed by the relentless flopping of bangs in your eyes, you may be itching for a trim. But because most salons are temporarily closed, it has become almost impossible to get a professional haircut. If you’re considering taking matters into your own hands, read this first. We asked four professional stylists to tell us about their best tips and tools for anyone who may be tempted to cut their hair at home.

Committing to DIY bang trims—and this tutorial for straight hair is a great place to start. If you want to take some of the weight out of your hair, you’ll need a pair of texturizing shears (also known as thinning or layering scissors). And, for those going for a pixie cut, get some good clippers and a few different size attachments. The type of trim you'll want depends on your curl type (check your curl type here). For looser 2A to 3B curls, you can probably follow this tutorial, where you work with dry hair and trim curl by curl at an angle to ensure voluminous results. To hold back sections of hair you don’t want to cut, Patrick recommends these simple clips from Conair.

As my hairstylist Angela Layng says, "We never make our best hair decisions when we're stressed." Additionally, the stylists I've interviewed emphasized the fact that home haircuts can quickly go awry. Just take a look at the videos of people trying to give themselves bangs. First of all, think hard about whether you really want to do this. So unless your hair is truly driving you buggy, our experts recommend waiting until you can get a professional cut.

Make sure you have the right hair-cutting tools

Cutting your hair is more complicated than it looks, and this guide is not one-size-fits-all, but it should at least help you figure out the basics on where to start. This hack to cut layered hair has never failed us and looks good on most face shapes too. Now, with your scissors, cut it straight, a few inches from the ends (trust us, this works). If you want the layers to be very accentuated, do a higher ponytail.

With so many 5-star reviews, Saiza scissors are said to deliver professional results. The scissors are made from stainless steel and feature ergonomic offset handles, convex edges for a smoothing cutting action and can be used on wet or dry hair. If you trim your hair a few times a year on your own, it's worth it to buy a pair approved by your stylist.

We’re big fans of DIY when it comes to hair, from making your own masks to at-home dye touch-ups and even the occasional (careful) bang trim. Cutting your own hair, however, is a tougher sell—there’s a reason we're loyal to our hairstylists. Still, sometimes it’s inevitable, and we’d never let you go at it alone.

The most important part of this step is making sure that the line between the section that you’ve tied up and the hair you’ve left down is super straight and symmetrical. Once you’re happy with the line, chop the bulk of the loose hair off with scissors and then shave it with clippers. For afro-textured hair, keep your hair dry, with no products, and brush it out to its fullest. Now, trim damages and split ends of your hair without stretching any of it out with your fingers, a little like cutting a hedge. Once you’ve cut it all, brush your hair out again and trim any stragglers that are sticking out over the edges. Repeat these steps until all of your hair is the same length.

If you have very curly hair, try a DIY Deva Cut, another technique that requires dry natural hair. Instead of brushing out your hair, just separate the curls with your fingers. Read on for valuable advice that will make your haircut a success. Then watch handpicked video tutorials that will teach you how to cut bangs, layer your hair, buzz cut your own hair, and even get a bob or a pixie cut at home. There are plenty of ways to change your look without being extreme or doing something you may regret.

Gently pull the scrunchie down the length of your hair, being careful to not pull it to one side. If your hair is especially long, you might want to pull from the bottom as shown in the second photo. This method is a little trickier, and I don't do it often, but it's doable.Leave 3-4 inches of hair below the scrunchie. At just £8.99, these hairdressing scissors are an absolute steal.

' says Sam Burnett, owner and Creative Director of Hare and Bone. But obviously over the past twelve months, we've had to take matters into our own hands (some of you have even been brave enough to learn how to dye your own hair). Now that salons are back open, we have access to the professionals again, but most salons are booked up for months (can you blame them?). So even though you might have managed to get an appointment booked in, it may not be for a while. Basically, you simply need to buzz cut your own hair at a definite area of your head (most often, the nape). Pop the majority of your hair in a bobble, leaving a few centimeters of hair loose at the back of your head.

Using a clipper is a nearly foolproof way to maintain short hair; if you use the right guide comb, you’ll get the right length. Its motor is extremely powerful yet pleasingly quiet, and its casing is lightweight but durable. In a pinch, Wahl’s Peanut Clipper & Trimmer is another good choice. Though we tested it for our beard trimming guide, it should work just fine for the hair on your head, as well. In testing, we were consistently impressed by its durability and power.

Sometimes, being cooped up inside can lead to a lot of rash hair decisions being made. It almost feels as if you’re going through a bad breakup and going through a whole hair journey about it. But, as countless hairdressers have said before, and will continue saying for the rest of eternity, it’s best that you don’t cut your own hair and, instead, wait until you can go to a professional. But, if desperate times call for desperate measures, I’ve sourced some advice straight from the experts on how to cut your own hair. With those tips in mind, follow the below step-by-step guides from hairstylist Lee Stafford to get DIY haircutting right.

Armpit Hair: Why Do We Have It? Is Shaving a Good Idea?

why do we have armpit hair

"Underarm hair has a few functions," explains Marta Camkiran, esthetician at Haven Spa. The hairs prevent skin-on-skin friction that can sometimes be painful or uncomfortable and can even lead to the formation of skin tags. That hair also serves as a protective cover for the arteries that traverse through your underarms. Basically, your body knows what’s up and is simply trying to protect you. While it may be uncomfortable to have, armpit hair happens because of hormone changes. Armpit hair is a collecting site that helps bacteria grow and cause odors, but the hair itself does not cause odors.

What does it mean to not grow any armpit hair?

Papules are solid inflamed bumps on the skin and pustules are inflamed bumps that are white or yellow at the tips, as a result of pus. Razor bumps typically occur in areas that are shaved most frequently. For example, people who shave their face regularly will experience the most razor burn in this area. In individuals who shave their armpits, legs, or groin areas most frequently, these areas may be most affected. Whether or not a person removes their pubic hair is a personal decision. Social pressures from peers, partners, or certain media can sometimes influence the decision.

Why We Have Armpit Hair (And You Should Consider Letting Yours Grow)

It denounces the so-called “pink tax” (the documented premium women pay for personal care products) and offers a “pink tax rebate” (a coupon toward a purchase). The company also says it donates 1% of all revenue to “women’s causes around the world”, including Every Mother Counts, a not-for-profit dedicated to global maternal health. What you do with your hair — whether you trim, shave, wax, or let it grow — is up to you. As with boils, abscesses tend to develop from irritation caused by certain hair removal methods, such as shaving or waxing.

What is the purpose of pubic hair?

In rare cases, hair removal might result in the development of boils in your genital area. Boils can develop from skin irritation and infections, such as cellulitis and folliculitis. In a 2015 study, men were more likely than women to report a preference for a pubic hair-free sexual partner.

Temporarily Stop Shaving or Shave Less Often

A study on pheromones published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine theorizes that underarm hair acts as an innate diffuser for your natural scent, helping you spread your musk. Hale hit puberty early, she told me, and her body hair was dark and noticeable. Now, she sometimes, but not always, removes hair from her legs and other body parts, but never from her armpits. Until recently she waxed her unibrow, but as it grows back, she’s started to think it’s “really cute”. Have you ever stopped, looked down, and asked yourself, “Why do we have pubic hair?

Removing the pubic hair has some risks and potential side effects, but most are mild. But the more people who brave the all-caps comments and the whispers and stares, the less shocking it becomes. As mentioned above, pubic hair serves a protective function by trapping pathogens that could otherwise enter your body. In the 2013 survey, around 21.1 percent of women reported that their pubic grooming was related to partner preference. The same survey showed that a similar percentage of men also groom according to their partner’s desire.

Is there such a thing as having ‘too much’ hair growth?

If caused by issues with your glands, surgery, radiation, or medication may be an option. Take a quiz to find out what's causing your loss of armpit/pubic hair. Hair follicles develop during fetal life, but their production stops after birth. As a result, hair follicles fail to re-grow after severe burns or extensive, deep wounds in the skin. Millar and her team are now investigating whether secreted WNT inhibitors suppress hair follicle development in these scenarios.

Infections

However, no matter what chemicals you put under your arms, you will absorb a greater percentage of them when you apply deodorant and/or antiperspirant after having just shaved. The rate of increase may seem minor, with the jump being from .01% to .06% with damaged skin, but that is a six-fold rise in chemical exposure regardless. Not shaving reduces skin-on-skin contact friction, which means when you do activities that involve arm movement, like running or walking, your skin is much less likely to get irritated by the friction.

Benefits of Armpit Hair Shaving

Personally, I always felt pressure to shave under my arms even though I’ve partnered with many AFAB (assigned female at birth) people who didn’t, and I find under-arm hair attractive on bodies of all genders. When I briefly stopped shaving under my arms in college, the “EW! ” response from both friends and strangers was more than I could deal with, and I returned to the habit after a few short months. In the time since, I maintained a weird sense of envy for those who didn’t shave their underarms.

There are a few methods a person can try to safely remove the pubic hair at home. A person needs to use caution with whichever method they choose to help prevent injury. According to one 2017 study, pubic hair may help reduce the risk of contracting a sexually transmitted infection (STI).

And social media, for both dyed and virgin body hair, is obviously a key part of what makes this round of hair affirmation different from previous eras. Women are not only refusing to conceal their body hair; they’re flaunting it. In 2014, on a lark, she and a friend dyed their underarm hair “ethereal blue”, and Hunt posted photos of the colorful pits on her blog. She described the attitude with which they approached the exercise as “sort of joy. It opened up a little more imagination.” Many people have since posted pictures of their “unicorn pits”, dyed in all the colors of the rainbow.

In a 2015 study published in the Journal of Sex Medicine, 60% of the 439 men surveyed said they were more into “hair-free” sexual partners. Everyone has their preferences, but trying to change someone else should never come into it. Another suggestion as to the reason for pubic hair in particular is that it acts as a genital blanket of sorts. This seems plausible until you consider the location of male pubes, which really don’t keep the important bits all that cozy.

She said that women should have the right to choose whatever they wanted to do with their bodies, even if it’s as simple as throwing out the razor. According to a 2011 study in the International Journal of Trichology, body hair protects the body against trauma. In the case of your underarms, it helps reduce skin-on-skin friction when you swing your arms as you walk or run. Armpit hair can save you from unnecessary chafing, irritation, or even heat rash, which can happen when sweat and abrasion mix. Last year, Nike shared an advertisement in which Annahstasia Enuke posed with visible armpit hair, and other, newer brands have followed suit.

Well, to answer that, we have to go back to the beginning. Millions of years ago, the ancestors of human beings were covered in hair. The reason for this was due to a number of functional purposes, explains Jablonski. Armpit hair, which is also known as axillary hair, starts during puberty. When males are at 11 to 14 years old and females are at 10 to 12 years old, the pituitary gland triggers a hormone group known as androgens. These are triggered within the testicles and the ovaries.

It wasn’t that I didn’t care how I looked; I wanted to look like I didn’t care how I looked. I wanted to be attractive, but I did not want to invest effort or enlist artifice into making myself so. Any such measures, to my 16-year-old mind, would have been cheating. One of Billie’s models is Hale, a 19-year-old musician and student at Bard College. On Billie’s website, Hale sits on the floor against a bed, wearing a frilled white tank top. She is smoothing the hair on her head back with arms raised, revealing undisturbed axillary fuzz.

As puberty progresses, the hair will get thicker and darker. At the same time, people may start to lose armpit hair as they get older. Armpit hair often gets thin and sparse after menopause when an individual no longer ovulates. If you’re unable to grow armpit hair, this is likely the result of genetics or some sort of health condition. On the whole, it’s important that you speak with your doctor about any symptoms you’re experiencing.

Female Armpit Hair Why Do Women Have Hairy Underarms?

why do we have armpit hair

Approximately two years later, armpit hair starts to grow. It grows in each person at a different age, according to their development. Overall, when it comes to shaving, it is the personal decision of a person to shave armpit hair or not. There are some that do so for aesthetic purposes, though there are benefits with leaving the areas natural.

WOMEN DIDN'T ALWAYS SHAVE THEIR ARMPITS.

Common diagnoses include androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and lymphocytic scarring alopecia, Agbai tells USA TODAY. Razor bumps occur when the hairs on your skin become ingrown as a result of shaving. This creates inflammation in the skin, resulting in small, irritated bumps. You can prevent razor bumps from happening in the first place by shaving less frequently, making changes to your shaving routine, and considering alternative shaving options. With the onset of and as more women realize that going hair-free is a personal choice, there may be other reasons why you should keep your armpit hair intact. Another theory around the purpose of pubic hair has to do with pheromones, or chemicals your body produces that send subconscious messages to other human animals, including potential mates.

Everything You’ve Ever Wanted to Know About Pit Hair

And if you’ve waxed, expect your armpit hair to grow back slower and more thin, as you’ve been yanking out your hair at the root. In spite of that persisting stigma, more and more women are choosing to embrace their armpit hair. Part of this is because it's just easier to have one less step in your beauty routine, but it's also about body hair positivity and empowerment.

The Real Health Benefits of Not Shaving Under Your Arms

One day a couple years ago, thanks to caring less about what others think than I did back then, I decided to join them. Despite armpit hair being as natural as the hair on our heads—and everywhere else it grows—women's armpit hair tends to be controversial. Even women who purposely grew their pit-hair out to flout societal expectations felt self-conscious showing armpit hair in social settings. You might not realize it, but having armpit hair might just boost your social life.

How we reviewed this article:

A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis, and select a personalized treatment that will help restore health to you hair and scalp. CCCA and LPP fall under the umbrella of lymphocytic scarring alopecia. The telltale signs of  these conditions are chronic inflammation of the scalp and the scarring of hair follicles, which can result in irreversible hair loss, Agbai notes.

The Real Reason We Have Armpit Hair

Now, however, whether or not to shave one’s body hair is purely an aesthetic choice, and one some are starting to examine more closely. This is because even though all genders have body hair, only women are pressured to shave theirs off. A shaved body has been the ideal of feminine beauty for decades, but that doesn’t make it healthy, or—mind-blowing thought—the most beautiful way to upkeep our bodies.

People who prefer to remove their pubic hair often cite comfort, routine, and sexual confidence as motivating factors. Pubic hair growth — including location and thickness — varies from one person to the next. While it’s a common practice to remove pubic hair, it’s important to acknowledge that it can go awry sometimes. And a 2017 survey of 5,674 adults published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Dermatology found that 25.6% of the respondents had experienced a grooming-related injury. A condition known as hyperhidrosis—excessive sweating—can be frustrating for those who'd like to be able to simply wear clothing they don't drench. According to Dr. Sonam Yadav, medical director of a cosmetic dermatology clinic in New Delhi, India, Botox is used to treat underarm sweating (yes, here in the U.S. too).

Armpit Hair: Why Do We Have It? Is Shaving a Good Idea?

AV performer Kaoru Kuroki refuses to shave her armpit hair as a protest against the longstanding tradition of censorship – and to make her stand out from other actresses. More research needs to be done to understand the link between pubic hair removal and sexual sensation. For instance, people who remove their pubic hair are more likely to be young, so it would make sense that they also report increased sexual functioning. Compared to other areas of the body, the pubic region has a lot of these glands.

The University of Pennsylvania Health System’s patient care facilities stretch from the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania to the New Jersey shore. Additional facilities and enterprises include Good Shepherd Penn Partners, Penn Medicine at Home, Lancaster Behavioral Health Hospital, and Princeton House Behavioral Health, among others. The Perelman School of Medicine is consistently among the nation's top recipients of funding from the National Institutes of Health, with $550 million awarded in the 2022 fiscal year. As for your lips, we don’t grow hair there because our lips are made up of “a different type of cell,” as they’re considered to be an extension of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, says Mariwalla.

Shaving is a cultural phenomenon enforced by those who set, and follow, beauty standards. Meanwhile, here are some health benefits to help you rethink underarm shaving. PHILADELPHIA – Why do humans have hair on our arms and legs but not on the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet? It’s a fundamental question in human evolution that researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania say they’ve found clues to in a new study.

In the same survey, men were less likely than women to report grooming for this reason. Some people prefer to let it grow, while others trim it, shave it, or wax it. Everyone has pubic hair, but we all make different decisions as to what we do with it. With that said, science is divided when it comes to pheromones. There’s debate over what they really are or do, and there’s also no conclusive evidence that they even exist in humans.

Also, it helps retain moisture or slow down sweat production. Thus, it prevents sweat from dripping, as it usually happens in the back. Lanugo, which spreads throughout the body, is present from the last trimester of gestation and disappears in the infant’s first months of life. Vellus (non-terminal) hair, is less fine than lanugo, light-colored, and barely noticeable.

'The Legend of Hell House' Chills With a Smartly Supernatural Tale

legend of the hell house

Campus police spokesperson Marc Lovicott said four officers were injured Wednesday as police tried to remove protesters’ tents from a central square at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Protesters arrested at the University of Georgia were issued interim suspensions and barred from campus without being given a chance to appeal. Georgia Republicans on Wednesday reiterated their support for a forceful police response to campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war. He said he didn’t yet have a sense how many of those arrested were students and how many weren’t affiliated with the colleges. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg said Wednesday that about 170 of the 280 arrested at Columbia University and nearby City College the night before have received summonses.

So, if you’re ready to enter the realm of Hell House, buckle up for a gripping and spine-chilling ride. Richard Matheson’s scripting of his novel Hell House builds into an exceptionally realistic and suspenseful tale of psychic phenomena. John Hough’s direction maintains this spirit as his cast of characters arrive at the deserted Hell House with an assignment from its present tycoon owner to learn the truth about survival after death, a secret he believes the house with its terrifying history may hold. The university has been paralyzed by demonstrations, and police have cleared out a building that had been occupied by anti-war protesters. The Provost at Columbia University in New York says all final exams and any remaining class sessions should be held remotely for students at its Morningside Heights campus. Any papers, projects or presentations due this week also are being delayed until next week. Several students who spoke said they had to rely on each other, not the police, for support as they were attacked, and that many in the pro-Palestinian encampment remained peaceful and did not engage with counter-protesters. Speakers disputed the university’s account that 15 people were injured and one hospitalized, saying the number of people taken to the hospital was higher. One student described needing to go to the hospital after being hit in the head by an object wielded by counter-protesters.

Keen direction, a strong screenplay, and a standout performance by Roddy McDowall make this feature a must-see for anyone who has yet to experience the film. I’m going to pause here to say that McDowall is ridiculously good in this role. The Planet of the Apes films and his portrayal of vampire hunter Peter Vincent are among his best remembered, but his turn here is easily my favorite. Benjamin is a man damaged by horrific tragedy and an experience that left him unable to continue using his psychic gifts.

Event Review: Monster-Mania 55

legend of the hell house

He taunts Belasco, declaring him a "son of a whore", and that he was no "roaring giant", but instead more likely a "funny little dried-up bastard" who fooled everyone about his alleged height. Even as objects begin to hurl themselves at Fischer, he continues to defy the entity, and insults Belasco's physical stature. Fischer then concentrates, and a stained-glass partition in the chapel shatters, revealing a hidden door. Hours earlier, police carrying riot shields burst into a building at Columbia University that pro-Palestinian protesters took over and broke up a demonstration that had paralyzed the school while inspiring others. New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in an appearance on “CBS Mornings” Wednesday that police had identified organizations and individuals who weren’t university students, but professional agitators.

As someone who loves spooky, intelligent tales of the supernatural despite a lack of belief in the subject, The Legend of Hell House (along with Matheson’s novel) hits a beautiful sweet spot where science and the paranormal come together in a smart and sexy union. It oozes an increasingly creepy and carnal atmosphere before reminding us that our fears of the unknown can be tempered with a simple realization. However, it does draw inspiration from real-life haunted house legends and paranormal experiences. Sent on the mission are a physicist, a femme mental medium and a physical medium.

Psychological Horror

In A Bug’s Life (1998), one of his final contributions to motion pictures, he provides the voice of Mister Soil. A team consisting of a physicist, his wife, a young female psychic and the only survivor of the previous visit are sent to the notorious Hell House to prove/disprove survival after death. Previous visitors have either been killed or gone mad, and it is up to the team to survive a full week in isolation, and solve the mystery of the Hell House. The house is believed to be haunted by the victims of Belasco's twisted and sadistic desires.

Filmmaking Stuff Podcast: Michael Joy talks Horror Movie Marketing

This includes Barrett’s wife Ann and mediums Florence Tanner and Benjamin Fischer, the sole survivor of the previous investigation. Once inside however, the house begins to prey on the team and their individual weaknesses. Granted, while the movie didn’t go nearly as hard as similarly-themed films in decades to come, it was quite a bit more graphic and disturbing than other haunted house films around the time, including House on Haunted Hill or Burnt Offerings. For 1973, there were plenty of glass shards going into faces, murderous cats, and late-night, sexually frustrated, ghost-chomped bite marks to satisfy even today’s horror fans. One of the film’s strengths lies in its ability to keep viewers guessing with unexpected twists and turns. The script, written by Matheson himself, masterfully combines elements of exorcism, possession, and psychic phenomena to create a truly chilling narrative.

A vivid and powerful opening paragraph to Shirley Jackson’s 1959 updating of the classic ghost story, The Haunting Of Hill House, regarded by many, including Stephen King, as one of the most important horror novels of the Twentieth Century. The novel has been filmed twice, both times under the title The Haunting (1963 and 1999), and was also inspiration for William Castle’s House On Haunted Hill (1959 and 1999). In 1971, prolific horror author and screenwriter Richard Matheson successfully created his own take on Shirley Jackson’s tale, adapted his own novel to the big screen and introduced us to The Legend Of Hell House (1973). There’s a particular scene when the group enters the house that belongs on the all-time best horror camera shots list. The group experience multiple instances of unexplained activity from moving objects – some shifting innocently while others launch with murderous intent – to what remains my favorite scene involving ectoplasm. Ghostbusters is great and all, but watching smoky tendrils slowly form from Florence’s fingers while Barrett’s staid British voice intones “Leave a sample in the jar please” is my plasm jam.

The Legend of Hell House was released on DVD by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on 4 September 2001. The film features a score with an electronic music bassline (with occasional woodwind and brass stabs). The score and electronic sound effects were created by Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, recorded at Hodgson's Electrophon studio in London.

Now, I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to see such an innovative film and obvious inspiration in the haunted house subgenre. If you haven’t seen it (or you haven’t read the book), I highly suggest you do the same. In addition to competent direction and a well-written screenplay, the film also benefits from a strong cast. He needn’t say much about the life-changing impact of his last visit to the Belasco House for the viewer to know it still haunts him. Ben usually speaks in a near-whisper, with a monotone delivery; giving the impression he’s a hollowed-out shell of his former self.

Both eschew the standard clanking chains and headless ghosts and aim for more cerebral places. Both also owe something to the psychological ghosts of Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898) and the suggestion that apparitions exists somewhere between the real, repression and what the ghostbusters want to believe. Four investigators seek psychic phenomena in a haunted mansion, the scene of a number of murders. Hough’s film is rated PG (although it was branded with an X upon initial release in the UK), but by the time the credits roll you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d experienced more than you have. Both Florence and Ann find their softer sides manipulated by the house, one by opening herself up too wide and the other by remaining far too clenched.

In 1973, the novel was made into a film The Legend of Hell House, starring Pamela Franklin, Roddy McDowall, Clive Revill, and Gayle Hunnicutt. Roddy McDowall does another of the trembling, fearful cowards he specialised in, but emerges with unexpected strength to become the hero of the hour. Pamela Franklin, who was only a few years earlier the teenage love interest in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969), has a more grown-up role here (one of a number of genre appearances she made throughout the 1970s) and gives a mature, intelligent performance. The idea that the spirits’ connections to the house were caused due to the location being used for debauchery (drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.) along with vampirism and murder, was a great move in giving the location its own personality. The ideas of scientific facts vs. faith, or believers vs. non-believers hadn’t really been explored much in film, and while we as the audience could see what was happening in the film, the actors were so into their roles, that the non-believers were almost convincing.

Police at two campuses in Arizona have cleared out encampments and arrested pro-Palestinian protesters. Most of those arrested Wednesday were released “with no citation issued,” Lovicott said. No one was arrested, and it’s not clear if all the demonstrators were students. The protesters are demanding that the University of Minnesota divest from companies that do business in Israel and put out a statement that supports Palestinian students. The Texas Department of Public Safety has accused Carlos Sanchez, a photojournalist with Austin television station KTBC, of hitting a state trooper with a camera while covering the April 24 protest. Video on social media showed troopers pulling Sanchez to the ground after he followed a mass of protesters and police.

Matheson (I Am Legend) and director John Hough (Twins of Evil) give equal respect to each perspective resulting in a horror film that approaches the unknown with a rare intelligence. In conclusion, “The Legend of Hell House” is a haunting tale of supernatural terror that stands the test of time. Its expertly crafted atmosphere, memorable performances, and thought-provoking storyline make it a true gem in the horror genre.

‘The Legend of Hell House’ Chills With a Smartly Supernatural Tale

Florence thinks she’s found the key to the haunting – Belasco’s rumored son, Daniel, died without knowing love and peace, and after dismissing his advances she finally gives herself over to the troubled spirit only to discover just how wrong she was. Ann meanwhile is the dutiful wife to a detached scientist, and her untapped desires find themselves channeled into a sexy somnambulism that sees her graphically hitting on poor, befuddled Benjamin. The sequences feature suggested or silhouetted nudity, and when paired with earlier descriptions of Belasco’s carnally-focused parties we’re left feeling the foul atmosphere without needing to experience it firsthand. Barrett agrees, brings along his wife Ann (Gayle Hunnicutt), and is teamed up with two psychics – Florence Tanner (Pamela Franklin, The Innocents) is a mental medium, young but highly regarded, and Benjamin Fischer (Roddy McDowall, Fright Night) is her physical medium counterpart.

His spokesman Izzy Gardon said the California Highway Patrol was deployed to the Los Angeles campus after “unacceptable” delays and limited response from campus police to clashes between dueling groups of protesters. State troopers have aided local and campus police in breaking up encampments and arresting protesters at Emory University in Atlanta and the University of Georgia in Athens. Emory’s president has since apologized for calling outside officers after police used pepper spray balls, aggressively tackled protesters and used an electrical stun gun to shock at least one protester. University officials have allowed a “Gaza Solidarity Encampment” that includes dozens of tents and hundreds of people to remain in the heart of the Minneapolis campus. A Texas journalist who was arrested during a protest on the University of Texas campus was booked and released Wednesday on misdemeanor charges of assault and interference with public duties. Announcements broadcasted on the University of California, Los Angeles campus Wednesday evening told demonstrators to disperse or they would be arrested and face a misdemeanor charge.

Popular Movies See all movies

From its origins as a novel to its adaptation onto the big screen, this movie has left an indelible mark on the horror genre. So grab some popcorn, turn off the lights, and prepare to be terrified by this haunting tale. Aging millionaire Rudolf Deutsch wants to be assured of the existence of life after death. He offers a group of parapsychologists and mediums £100,000 each if they will investigate the notoriously haunted Belasco mansion, which has been nicknamed Hell House. A previous attempt to explore the house sent all but one of the investigating team insane. A new team is assembled under parapsychological researcher Chris Barrett.

He’s created a machine that he claims will dissipate the mindless energy through reverse polarity thereby emptying the house of so-called paranormal activity. John Hough does a fine job with the things-that-go-bump-in-the-night aspects of the material, he fails to breathe any life into Richard Matheson's woefully underdeveloped screenplay, which he adapted from his own novel. The performances and script of this movie are all top notch, but what really makes this movie one of my favorites in the subgenre is its direction by Hough. The external shots of the house were filmed at Wykehurst Park, West Sussex. Mr. Deutsch's mansion in the opening sequence is Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. The Legend of Hell House is one of only two productions of James H. Nicholson after his departure from American International Pictures — a company he had run, along with Samuel Z. Arkoff, since 1954.

It’s the unsettled spirits of these revelers who are thought to haunt the home, and Barrett believes he has the answer to clearing them out once and for all. Roddy McDowall, who began his long career as a child actor in the late thirties, should need no introduction. McDowall continued his career successfully into adulthood, but it was usually in character roles, notably in heavy makeup as various chimpanzee characters in four of the five original Planet Of The Apes movies (1968 to 1973) and in the 1974 television series that followed. He was frequently a guest star on television shows, appearing in such series as the original Twilight Zone, The Eleventh Hour, Buck Rogers In The 25th Century, Night Gallery, The Invaders, Fantasy Island, Columbo, and Quantum Leap. He played the villain Bookworm in the camp sixties Batman television series and had an acclaimed recurring role as The Mad Hatter in Batman The Animated Series. He also played the rebel scientist Doctor Jonathan Willoway in the seventies Bermuda Triangle science fiction series The Fantastic Journey.

Barrett, Tanner, and Fischer are hired by dying millionaire, William Reinhardt Deutsch, to investigate the possibility of life after death for a week. To this end, they must enter the infamous Belasco House in Maine, regarded as the most haunted house in the world. The house is called "Hell House" due to the horrible acts of blasphemy and perversion that occurred there under the silent influence and supervision of Emeric Belasco. Meanwhile, there are other mysteries to be found in Hell House, such as the supposed murder of Emeric Belasco's son, Daniel Myron Belasco, and the puzzle as to why a majority of people who enter the home are dead by the end of their visit. I loved this idea and its execution here as a kid, and re-watches of the film have confirmed for me just how well the latter explores the former. Barrett and his wife are non-believers in the paranormal world of ghosts and possessions, while the two mediums think his scientific approach is bunk in the face of spirits and the afterlife.

That’s not to imply the film is dry, but instead it perfectly sets the stage for a tale that begins with an academic feel before descending into fleshy madness. Despite mixed reviews upon its release, “The Legend of Hell House” has gained a deserved cult following over the years. Its legacy as a horror classic is cemented by its ability to go beyond conventional scares and explore deeper emotional themes.

Film Review: Trilogy of Terror (

Sanchez had originally faced a felony charge of assaulting a public servant, then was rebooked on misdemeanor charges. Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations denounced ”the murderous cries of the pro-Palestinian mobs” on university campuses across the United States that were calling for the annihilation of Jews and Israelis. The university is strongly encouraging students to leave campus and go home early for the semester.

The director went on to make the amazingly different cult road movie, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry. The Legend of Hell House emerges far more strongly as a story than The Haunting did. Legendary genre screenwriter Richard Matheson has simplified his original book Hell House (1971). Primarily, Matheson pares down the book’s shock excesses, something that would have brought the film into the domain of The Exorcist (1973), which came out six months later the same year.

Set in the eerie and mysterious Belasco House, the film follows a team of paranormal investigators as they attempt to unravel the dark secrets of this haunted mansion. The Mount Everest of haunted houses, it was once the home of Emeric Belasco (Michael Gough), a millionaire infamous for all manner of excessive perversions – sadism, bestiality, necrophilia and cannibalism. A physicist (Clive Revill) and his wife (Gayle Hunnicutt) and two mediums (Roddy McDowall and Pamela Franklin) are hired by an eccentric to prove the existence of life after death, and Hell House is to be the proving ground. As they argue science versus the supernatural, evil forces shake the house. One-by-one the visitors are stalked by the spirits of the house, which seem to manifest a bizarre and powerful sexual influence on them. Piece-by-piece the terrifying secret of Hell House is unraveled, leading the survivors to the film’s final, shocking climactic revelation.

Meta Horizon OS is the result of a decade of work at Meta to build a next-generation computing platform. To pioneer standalone headsets, we developed technologies like inside-out-tracking and self-tracked controllers. To allow for more natural interaction systems and social presence, we pioneered hand, eye, face and body tracking. And for mixed reality, we built a full stack of technologies for blending the digital and physical worlds, including high-resolution Passthrough, Scene Understanding and Spatial Anchors. This long-term investment that began on the mobile-first foundations of the Android Open Source Project has produced a full mixed reality operating system used by millions of people.

As we begin opening Meta Horizon OS to more device makers, we’re also expanding the ways app developers can reach their audiences. Today, we’re taking a major step toward our vision for a more open computing platform for the metaverse. We’re opening up the operating system that powers our Meta Quest devices to third-party hardware makers, giving developers a larger ecosystem to build for and ultimately creating more choice for consumers. This platform is the product of a decade of investment into the underlying technologies that enable mixed reality, and opening it up means a lot more people will benefit from that investment. We’re working with leading global technology companies to create a new ecosystem of mixed reality devices, and we’re making it even easier for developers to build mixed reality apps.
